This year’s contemporary art fairs Amsterdam Drawing and Unseen shows us a rich portfolio of young talents and known artists. With more than hundred international galleries representing work of artists and photographers one day and a few lines are hardly enough to highlight the timeless qualities exposed.
Drawings are more than just drawings. The late Merina Beekman gives soul to black and white lines by combining them with embroidery. herman de vries brings us back to the essence of humanity, our duality, by simply superimposing ‘yes no’. Ran Zhang’s pure grey shapes of colour rise above matter and form.
Photographs are more than just framed images. Pictures by Augustin Rebetez transcend the conventional framing while exhibiting them in the form of a poetic collage. Photographs are whitewashed over by Cornford & Cross becoming truly invisible | unseen.
The hidden sense of Japanese photography is presented in a powerful special exhibition curated by Chihiro Minato and Shigeo Goto. The ‘deathless’ of dead flowers by Atsunobu Katagiri, one of the 16 participating japanese artists, pictures what lingers on, when all seems gone.
