For more than 30 years I am on a mission in the fashion industry, designing collections and setting up brands. Clothes are our second skin. They represent what we believe, feel and stand for. They are our first contact with the world around us. Clothes are a way to communicate and express who we are.
As a designer I did all the ‘good’ things in the field of clothing design. Good for the earth and our environment. From fun fashion, to awearness design. From recycled garments out of dispatched cotton, jeans and plastic bottles to organic cotton clothing. From fair clothes and crafts to mainstream commercial collections and art. However in the end clothes are only tools! These tools can be made in a sustainable way. And yes, they should be.
It is not by changing the way the industry works, or by making more clothes from better, more sustainable, materials, like recycled plastics, jeans, cotton, and use organic cotton or wools that we will become more sustainable. True sustainability is an internal job. It is not found somewhere out there. It is right here. Right now. If we don’t change the way we think about clothing we will have a difficult time to deal with the changes around us in the coming years.
Change for the better will only happen if we change our mindset, not our wardrobe. It is not about having more to be more. It is not through acquiring more wealth, that we will become healthy and happy. It is not by finding someone who loves you, that you will find love. The only way out is the way in. The only way to achieve well-being is by being well. The only way to find love is to be love. The only way to dress sustainable is to be happy with what you have. Respect your clothes and care for them. Keep them and cherish them for a lifetime. Choose them carefully and treat them like your children. Be creative with them. Grow old with dignity together.
If we turn to fashion, to express our uniqueness we will stay hungry. Captive of our own addiction. True uniqueness can only appear if we brake free from the prison in our heads. Free yourself and be your self instead of selling your soul to the devil dressed in Prada. Wake up! There is no such thing as sustainable fashion. That is a contradiction. Fashion is always temporary and sustainability is something that lasts. There is no such thing as uniqueness in the fashion industry. Another contradiction. Everybody is unique. Uniqueness is not something you buy, but something you are.
Life’s not about how much you can get,
it’s about how much you can give…
