The art of stitching was and still mainly is a women’s job. In my first and second primary school years I learned to stitch and made a stitching sampler, while the boys in my class learned to work with wood and metal. Things have changed. The slow process and delicate handwork of needle, thread, wood and metal have made place for digital tablets and swiping fingers.
The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen revives the stories of people who once lived on the shores of the Zuiderzee. The Hand of the Maker exhibition travels back in time and shows a wide selection of over eighty so-called darning and letter samplers, all from the Zuiderzee area, some of which have never been exhibited in public before.
